BEST-ENERGY project deals with the application of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) for water (wastewater and groundwater) treatment. In particular, this project will study the differences between abiotic and biocathodes as well as the application of microbial fuel cells (MFC) for the wastewater and groundwater treatment; and the microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) for the hydrogen generation treating organic matter from wastewater.

In particular, this project will study the differences between abiotic and biocathodes as well as the application of microbial fuel cells (MFC) for the wastewater and groundwater treatment; and the microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) for the hydrogen generation treating organic matter from wastewater. The project combines basic and applied research to elucidate the main mechanisms of exoelectrogenic bacteria for extracellular electron transfer, the design conditions of the BES to enhance process efficiency in terms of both water treatment and energy (electricity or hydrogen) production.
